Thanks for the simple solution to what I was thinking a long tedious resolution originally.

The presence Icon is based on your local (client) installation of Messenger or LCS software, have you checked that you have added these other users to you list of contacts in Messenger?

I have added several people to the summary link web part, one person shows the presence icon but none of the others do. Any idea why the behavior would not be consistent. All of the people are in my AD
